” Do you know what to do, know how to do it and know you’re capable of doing it, but you’re just not getting it done?? You’re not alone! There is one critical ingredient that separates those who are living life at their full potential and those who aren’t quite hitting the mark. “

The key that ultimately determines whether we succeed in achieving our outcomes is our level of ACTION. And on the flip side to that is INACTION or PROCRASTINATION.

I often talk about procrastination in my workshops and seminars. It’s a guaranteed way to make a majority of the room squirm! We’re all guilty of it in some way shape or form. Personally, if I have spreadsheets to look over or numbers to crunch I’ll find myself with the sudden urge to dust the skirting boards!

So why do we do it?
1. You have the wrong goals.

· In order to find the right goals we need to have a crystal clear picture of what we actually want. It’s easy in this social media age of distraction and comparison to get caught up in what we think we should be doing, rather than what’s actually right for us. Take a moment to sit down, visualise your ideal life and put pen to paper. What legacy do you want to leave? What matters to you? What do you value? How do you want to feel? What do you want to achieve or create? A detailed process of self-analysis can be life altering. My clients often have a big fat realisation during this process that they’ve been madly climbing a particular ladder only to realise it’s been propped against the wrong wall!

· Are your goals big enough to light a fire in your belly? Do they scare you a little and excite you a lot? If so, you have it nailed.

· Are your goals TOO big? If our goals aren’t achievable we can become disillusioned. Shoot for the stars and land on the moon you say? I say shoot for the moon and land on the moon! Wouldn’t that be more satisfying?

2. You have no Action Plan

· To guide our actions we must have a step-by-step plan. A goal on it’s own can feel overwhelming. Imagine a builder trying to construct a house with no blueprint, arriving to a building site with a pile of wood and some tools and blindly getting to work. Clearly you wouldn’t want your house to be built that way, so why attempt build your life that way? You need a sequence and structure so that your actions complement and reinforce one another. Your own blueprint for success.

· What are the necessary actions you need to take consistently in order to achieve the desired results? Think about your ultimate outcomes and then work backward step by step. If your goal is to become an inspiring leader of a happy, fulfilled and successful team a step might be to find a role model who has achieved this level of success. Find out what they’ve done, discover your gaps, attend the appropriate training, enlist the help of a coach, ask your team for feedback. It’s critical that you identify even the tiniest of micro steps that you can implement TODAY to get in to the rhythm of daily accomplishment. What are some things you can do today, tomorrow, next week, next month and next year to get to where you want to go?

· If you’re not sure what your plan should be just ask yourself what’s getting in the way of having what you want right now, and how can you change this?

3. You have a lack of focus

· If you have weak and scattered focus you have weak and scattered energy and you’re either achieving little bits of lots of things or not achieving much at all. Have you ever had those days where you wake up and say “I’ve got so much to do today, I’m so busy, I have so much to do!” You walk around just telling yourself and/or others how much you have to do and end up achieving nothing?! This is what a lack of focus can do to you. It’s even trickier in today’s world where our attention span has now dropped to a measly eight seconds, one second less than that of a goldfish!

· Know what needs to happen and in what order, and ditch the mobile phone notifications. The funny cat video your friend just tagged you in can wait!

4. Mental Barriers

· In an ideal world if you have the right goals, laser focus and an action plan, it’d be near impossible to procrastinate. But in reality we’re dragging barriers around with us that are preventing us from achieving success even when we have the best of intentions. The most common of these are fear and doubt.

· These can be sticky little suckers, but the fastest way to wave goodbye to them is to retrain yourself to think differently and believe differently. Think to the future rather than the past, keep your vision front of mind, connect to a greater good (who else will benefit if you achieve all that you hope to achieve) and discover what you’re truly capable of.
